Why is betrixaban used?

Betrixaban is used to prevent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in hospitalized patients at risk for blood clots because of the loss or decreased ability to move around or due to other factors.

Can betrixaban cause spinal hematoma?

Spinal/Epidural Hematoma: Epidural or spinal hematomas may occur in patients treated with betrixaban who are receiving neuraxial anesthesia or undergoing spinal puncture. The risk of these events may be increased by the use of in-dwelling epidural catheters or concomitant use of medical products affecting hemostasis. These hematomas may result in long-term or permanent paralysis. Consider these risks when scheduling patients for spinal procedures .

Is there a reverse agent for betrixaban?

There is NO REVERSAL AGENT OR ANTIDOTE for betrixaban. Very limited data are available to guide management of bleeding.

Does betrixaban affect coagulation?

Betrixaban is not intended to be monitored using routine coagulation testing. Its fixed dosing is not intended to be adjusted on the basis of any coagulation laboratory parameter. As a result of FXa inhibition, betrixaban prolongs clotting tests such as prothrombin time (PT)/ INR, and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). Changes observed in these clotting tests at the expected therapeutic dose, however, are small, subject to a high degree of variability, and not useful in monitoring the anticoagulation effect of betrixaban
