Mercy offers patients financial assistance for those who are uninsured and ineligible for federal medical assistance. Payment plans are available and/or a patient can be put on a sliding scale which would allow a percentage of assistance depending on their eligibility under current guidelines. How many days before a procedure do you need to fill out a pre-registration form?

Please fill out your hospital pre-registration at least three days prior to your service. On the day of your procedure, please bring your insurance cards and photo ID with you for verification.

Does Merck charge for enrollment?

Merck is not associated with any individuals or organizations that may charge patients a fee to assist them in completing enrollment forms for our programs. These individuals or organizations are acting independently of Merck, and do not have Merck's consent.

Can you go without a Merck?

At Merck, we believe that no one should go without the medicines or vaccines they need. That is why the company provides certain medicines and adult vaccines for free to people who do not have prescription drug or health insurance coverage and who, without our assistance, cannot afford their Merck medicine and vaccines.

How does Mercy pay their patients?

Mercy bills patients for their responsible portion via monthly statements. Patients are responsible for payment of their accounts. Patients receiving financial assistance are responsible for making payment arrangements on their remaining account balances within the statement period. If there is no payment or valid address for mailing within a 3-month statement period, the account will qualify for transfer to the collection agency. To prevent collection action, Mercy has financial counselors and customer service representatives available to assist in setting up payment options Monday through Friday, during business hours as noted on the statement.

Mercy Medical Center (Mercy) is committed to providing financial assistance to persons who have healthcare needs and are uninsured, underinsured, ineligible for government programs, or are otherwise unable to pay for medically-necessary care based on their individual financial situation. Consistent with its mission to deliver compassionate, high quality, affordable healthcare services and to advocate for those who are poor and disenfranchised, Mercy Medical Center strives to ensure that the financial capacity of people who need healthcare services does not prevent them from seeking or receiving care. Mercy Medical Center will provide, without discrimination, care for emergency medical conditions to individuals regardless of his or her eligibility for financial assistance or for government assistance. Mercy Medical Center will not engage in actions that discourage individuals from seeking emergency medical care.

Can you apply for financial assistance without completing the financial assistance application?

Patients who meet presumptive eligibility criteria under this Section may be granted financial assistance without completing the financial assistance application. There are instances when a patient may appear eligible for financial assistance, but there is no financial assistance application on file due to a lack of supporting documentation. Often there is adequate information provided by the patient or through other sources, which could provide sufficient evidence to provide the patient with financial assistance. In the event there is no evidence to support a patient’s eligibility for financial assistance, Mercy Medical Center may use third-party agencies in determining approximate income amounts for the basis of determining financial assistance eligibility and potential discount amounts. Presumptive eligibility may be determined on the basis of individual life circumstances that may include:

Does Mercy Medical Center have collections?

Mercy Medical Center shall develop policies and procedures for internal and external collection practices (including actions the hospital may take in the event of non -payment, including collections action and reporting to credit agencies) that take into account the extent to which the patient qualifies for financial assistance, a patient’s good faith effort to apply for a governmental program or for financial assistance from Mercy Medical Center, and a patient’s good faith effort to comply with his or her payment agreements with Mercy Medical Center. For patients who qualify for financial assistance and who are cooperating in good faith to resolve their discounted hospital bills, Mercy Medical Center may offer extended payment plans, will not send unpaid bills to outside collection agencies, and will cease all collection efforts.

In keeping with the mission of the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Medical Center (Mercy) is dedicated to making healthcare services accessible to our community. Mercy acknowledges the financial needs of patients and families who are unable to afford the charges associated with the cost of medical care. In that regard, Mercy provides medically necessary healthcare services at a discount to patients who qualify for assistance under Mercy’s Financial Assistance Policy. Patients who qualify for Financial Assistance may not be charged more for emergency or other medically necessary care than the amounts generally billed to patients who have insurance for such care.

The necessity of medical treatment for any patient will be based on the clinical judgment of the healthcare provider without regard to the financial status of the patient.

How long does it take to get financial assistance?

To qualify for financial assistance an individual’s application must be received within 240 days from date of the first statement post-discharge. The decision to provide Financial Assistance will be based on a review of the patient’s income, assets and liabilities.

In keeping with Federal Legislation, Mercy Medical Center does seek full payment on all medical bills; however, we intend to help our patients in developing a payment plan or making other payment arrangements. The hospital financial counselors can help you identify ways you can fulfill your financial responsibility.
