What is Mercy Medical Center?

In keeping with the mission of the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Medical Center (Mercy) is dedicated to making healthcare services accessible to our community. Mercy acknowledges the financial needs of patients and families who are unable to afford the charges associated with the cost of medical care. In that regard, Mercy provides medically necessary healthcare services at a discount to patients who qualify for assistance under Mercy’s Financial Assistance Policy. Patients who qualify for Financial Assistance may not be charged more for emergency or other medically necessary care than the amounts generally billed to patients who have insurance for such care.

What is the necessity of medical treatment for any patient based on?

The necessity of medical treatment for any patient will be based on the clinical judgment of the healthcare provider without regard to the financial status of the patient.

How long does it take to get financial assistance?

To qualify for financial assistance an individual’s application must be received within 240 days from date of the first statement post-discharge. The decision to provide Financial Assistance will be based on a review of the patient’s income, assets and liabilities.

Does Mercy Medical Center pay medical bills?

In keeping with Federal Legislation, Mercy Medical Center does seek full payment on all medical bills; however, we intend to help our patients in developing a payment plan or making other payment arrangements. The hospital financial counselors can help you identify ways you can fulfill your financial responsibility.

Does Mercy offer medically necessary services?

In that regard, Mercy provides medically necessary healthcare services at a discount to patients who qualify for assistance under Mercy’s Financial Assistance Policy.

Can I set up a payment plan?

Interest-free, short-term financing may be available. Under our short-term financing program, you may pay balances in equal installments of at least $50 for a period of up to 24 months. Auto-pay using a credit or debit card is required for all payment plans.

Can you apply for financial assistance without completing the financial assistance application?

Patients who meet presumptive eligibility criteria under this Section may be granted financial assistance without completing the financial assistance application. There are instances when a patient may appear eligible for financial assistance, but there is no financial assistance application on file due to a lack of supporting documentation. Often there is adequate information provided by the patient or through other sources, which could provide sufficient evidence to provide the patient with financial assistance. In the event there is no evidence to support a patient’s eligibility for financial assistance, Mercy Medical Center may use third-party agencies in determining approximate income amounts for the basis of determining financial assistance eligibility and potential discount amounts. Presumptive eligibility may be determined on the basis of individual life circumstances that may include:

Does Mercy Medical Center have collections?

Mercy Medical Center shall develop policies and procedures for internal and external collection practices (including actions the hospital may take in the event of non -payment, including collections action and reporting to credit agencies) that take into account the extent to which the patient qualifies for financial assistance, a patient’s good faith effort to apply for a governmental program or for financial assistance from Mercy Medical Center, and a patient’s good faith effort to comply with his or her payment agreements with Mercy Medical Center. For patients who qualify for financial assistance and who are cooperating in good faith to resolve their discounted hospital bills, Mercy Medical Center may offer extended payment plans, will not send unpaid bills to outside collection agencies, and will cease all collection efforts.
