Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and the body. In MS, the primary target of the immune system is the myelin sheath that surrounds the nerve fibers; the damaged myelin forms scar tissue.
