Orilissa is a prescription medicine used to treat moderate to severe pain caused by endometriosis in adult women. Endometriosis is a condition that affects your womb (uterus) and is caused when your endometrium (the lining of tissue inside your womb) grows outside of your womb. This can spread to your fallopian tubes, your ovaries and the inside of your pelvis. It can cause a range of problems, including fertility issues. It is often painful, sometimes severely so.
What is the active ingredient in Orilissa?
The active ingredient in Orilissa is called elagolix. It is a medicine that reduces the levels of estrogen released by your ovaries. When you take Orilissa the elagolix it contains is absorbed into your bloodstream and transported to your pituitary gland. Your pituitary is a gland found in your neck and regulates your other hormone releasing glands. When elagolix attaches to the outside of your pituitary gland, it causes the gland to signal to your ovaries to produce less estrogen. This can ease your endometriosis and lessen any pain you feel.
