Through the Patient Assistance Transport Scheme (PATS), subsidies are provided to assist South Australians who are required to travel more than 100km each way to access necessary and approved medical specialist services that are not available locally.

PATS is a subsidy program funded by the Government of South Australia and administered through the six regional local health networks by the Rural Support Service in SA Health.

Travel fares

You can claim full cover for air and bus travel, at the cheapest rate taking into account all travel factors.

Ground transport

You can claim up to $50 for the entire approved trip. Escorts are not eligible for a ground subsidy.

Fuel

You can claim 20 cents per kilometre per patient, to a maximum of three patients per vehicle.

Getting home

If you have been taken to a medical service for emergency treatment or have been transferred between hospitals, you and your escort may be able to get help to return home.

If you live in rural and remote areas, and have to travel more than 50km from your local public hospital to access specialist medical services, you may be eligible for the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS) to help with travel costs.
